Pink Floyd brengt het legendarische The Wall waarschijnlijk het album van 1979 uit. Met Look Sharp! brengt Joe Jackson een briljant debuutalbum uit. Supertramp is zeer succesvol met de LP Breakfast in America. Van het album Voulez-Vous van ABBA worden zeven singles uitgebracht die bijna allemaal een grote hit worden. Verder behoren tot de beste albums uit 1979, The Cure met het debuutalbum Three Imaginary Boys. Net als Joy Division met Unknown Pleasures. AC/DC breekt definitief door met Highway to Hell. Met In Through the Out Door brengt Led Zeppelin het laatste studio-album uit. Frank Zappa zet met Joe’s Garage een rock-opera op de plaat. De zomer brengt Off the Wal van Michael Jackson. De eerste LP waarover hij volledige zeggenschap heeft en die geproduceerd wordt door Quincy Jones. Funkadelic brengt met Uncle Jam Wants You een echte funk-klassieker uit. Het nummer (Not Just) Knee Deep dient later als belangrijkste sample voor de wereldhit van De La Soul‘s Me Myself and I. De Engelse Ska groepen Madness met One Step Beyond… en The Specials met het gelijknamige album debuteren. Zangeres Marianne Faithfull maakt met Broken English haar beste plaat. Aan het einde van het jaar komt The Clash met een verrassend goed Post Punk album London Calling.
