Buiten een tweetal reünies bestond de band van 1977 tot 1986. The Police mengde reggae met rock en punk muziek. Slechts drie topmuzikanten maakten deel uit van de The Police. Natuurlijk leadzanger en bassist Sting. Daarnaast drummer Stewart Copeland en bovendien gitarist Andy Summers.
